Here it is, July 4th 2014, and one of the most jumbled, tumultuous decades in American history. Having said that, I know that you may have personally lived through worse, some of the sharpest, most painful events in recent memory, and that those far surpass what we experience in our daily lives. In general, however, we are living in far too interesting times.
I have asked the same questions, over and over, about what it is to live in our little experiment in democracy, the one that grew to be the biggest global superpower and is arguably losing that status, day by day. Many of you answered that question, and one answer to what it means to be American is a single word: Independence.
